Oooppss!! I loved the article and used your install method. Sadly, the icon didn't appear on the desktop, only a file icon which was had both the lock symbol and a box with an X in it. Calling GE thru that icon brought up the GE window, but then nothing else. No zooming, no searching, etc.

Please give me the uninstall method and I could try it again. Thanks.
I second that. How do you uninstall a program when it was installed using wget? It doesn't show up in the package manager, there's no 'unintall' command for wget like there is with Apt-get. There's also no Google Earth folder with an uninstall package.
Me too, the desktopicon doesn't work, it has some lock symbols on it. GE works only once during the start process when its first fired up. If I close it down and later start it from the menu or command line, I just get black space with stars, the earth is gone or destroyed, no zoom or nothing. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, I have to keep re-installing GE with the above instructions everytime I need to use it.. Not sure why it doesn't work after its first run, but on the 1st run it looks and works great.

Hi.

I also failed to second run.

EfChou's solution worked for me.

AWESOME!!! Thanks heaps for that, works like a charm now :-)
After all the fix to make it work fine you should do: sudo chmod 777 /opt/google-earth/googleearth-bin

or elseway you can get gearth no access to network authentication
tanks
Very slow on my Ubuntu 8.10 , I have to disable compiz.
