Howto: Install Safari on Ubuntu with Flash and Shockwave! (Hulu, Youtube, Shockwave Works!)

Ok ive been browser hunting and seen a lot of hype about Safari browser's speed so I decided to give it a whirl, I managed to get it install with Flash and it works very well with youtube and hulu ! Here is how I got it installed, let me know how it goes if you decide to check it out!

By the way im impressed with the speed, its as fast as firefox, if not faster! (unforunately its not open-source :(

First lets install Microshit's Core Fonts and wine within the Terminal Applications->Accessories->Terminal
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts wine

Second Make sure wine is set to use the windows version Xp, just click Applications/Wine/Configure Wine
or type "winecfg" in the terminal

Third lets copy Microshits Core Fonts to the wine font directory!
cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Arial*.ttf ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/
cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Times_New_Roman*.ttf ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/
Make sure wine is set to use the windows version Xp, just click Applications/Wine/Configure Wine
or type "winecfg" in the terminal
Lets download my backup of Safari or download here
wget http://ubuntu-debs.googlecode.com/files/SafariSetup.exe
wine SafariSetup.exe
Uncheck ”Install Bonjour for Windows” and “Automatically update Safari and other Apple Software.” after accepting the terms then click install!

Ok now that Safari is Sucessfully installed in Ubuntu lets install flash for safari!
wget http://ubuntu-debs.googlecode.com/files/install_flash_player.exe
wine install_flash_player.exe

Now Safari is Installed with the correct fonts and has flash, so lets execute Safari From Applications->Wine->Programs->Safari

Install Shockwave:
You gotta download and install shockwave slim or full from the adobe site http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ then:
You need to copy the files located in the adobe shockwave dir to the Safari plugin dir
ie:
cp -R ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/Adobe/Director/* ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files"/Safari/Plugins

Then Check Safari's Installed Plug-ins under the Help menu to see which plug-ins Safari is able to find, it should be there!

the only problem with it is bookmarks and https connections:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10480
On mine, the user interface looks terrible; otherwise, it works fine.
I tried to install it on Slackware using the latest Wine version, but i always get a dump core after i execute the Safari.exe

Does the fonts are crucial to the installation?
Willy the fonts are crucial, it will not run without them, you will get constant core dumps without the ms core fonts
Can you install shockwave too? My kids would like to use shockwave on some sites.
Works great unless I try to go to Preferences, then Safari locks up. Anybody else?
@scott h
me too.. :(

but it hangs also in so many situations that is unusable!

Hang on my computer at home, too (when I go to preferences), but not at my one at work -- weird.
What's so great about Safari anyways? Curious why anybody would want to run safari over "Whine" when Firefox blows it away. (opinion of course)

I followed all the steps, and it installed nicely :D

So i open safari, and i try to go to youtube to check if teh flash player works... just as i click enter after typing in youtube.com, the entire safari window goes gray and stops responding...

Another problem, i cant seem to log onto facebook.... why?:P
Uh.... Actually WebKit (the rendering engine that powers Safari) is Open Source.

You can read all about it here: http://webkit.org
thanks for the news
I find the instructions to install Shockwave too vague. On the page that you are referring to ://http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternate...there are multiple options to download Shockwave and I don't know which one to choose. Choosen the Windows Internet Explorer option does not work. Choosen OSX option does not work. Please assist.
Works Great! Thanks for this!!!

Agreed with the others - your directions for installing shockwave DO NOT WORK as there is no download option on that page, it is a browser-based install that doesn't work in Wine.
I followed the directions, got Safari running, greyed out on flash objects. Gave up on that approach, but left flash and shockwave installed. Downloaded and installed Firefox under wine and--ta-da!--youtube, flash, and shockwave all functioned fine on firefox startup.
Crashes occasionally, but worth it.

I have a distro xandros: cuando quiero bajar msttfonts vino, con apt-get, falla y dice: no compatible o es un paquete obsoleto.
Que otra paquete o forma de descargar los core fonts de microsoft ?
Quien me auda.
Muchas gracias,
lalo.

oh... man thanks for your help.
https not working
flash not showing
just nice to check design
But else ...
There are better browsers around.
I will try installing safari in my ubuntu, thanks for sharing
I have used the guide above, and managed to install Safari correctly. When Safari loads, the default page is the apple.com/startpage. If I navigate around that site using those links, it works fine, but as soon as I type any address into the address bar, and press [ENTER], Safari starts to load the page and then crashes.

I believe the output at which point the crash occurs is:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x6aab55a1 (thread 0009), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x6aab55a1).

Any thoughts?
Well, first off, I will actually say what I am running as far as I know, I have Ubuntu 8.04, with WINE (don't know what version exactly... but up to date with apt-get at this time.). I got safari to work with Flash/Shockwave and the video actually looks great!!! but no sound?!?!?! I can watch hulu just fine as long as I don't need sound?!?! any ideas?
