Amarok 2.0 Released!

After two years of development, Amarok 2 has arrived. This arrival is just the beginning.
This new version brings with it a lot of changes:

  • Completely redesigned user interface
  • Tight integration with online services such as Magnatune, Jamendo, MP3tunes, Last.fm and Shoutcast
  • Completely overhauled scripting API and plugin support to allow better integration into Amarok
  • Migration from the KDE 3 to KDE 4 framework, and utilization of core technologies such as Solid, Phonon, and Plasma

The user interface has been redesigned to make context information like lyrics and albums from the same artist more accessible and allow you to decide which information you want to see by adding applets to the Context View in the middle. The new Biased Playlists offer a way to let Amarok take care of your playlist in an intelligent way similar to Dynamic Playlists in previous versions. A new service framework allows for a tight integration of online services like Jamendo, Magnatune and Ampache. New services can easily be added via GetHotNewStuff in Amarok or from kde-apps.org. More applets and scripts are being worked on and users are welcome to contribute more to make Amarok suit their needs. The migration from the KDE 3 to KDE 4 framework allows us to make use of technologies like Plasma, Phonon and Solid which make Amarok easier to use and maintain and ready for the future of music on your computer and on the internet.
These are only some of the great new features of Amarok 2. Give it a try!

Hello, I am fairly new to Ubuntu. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy 32 bit. I am looking for a music player that will control my iPod. The current one I am using will mount it, but I cannot sync new music to my iPod. Any help would be awesome as I am in Iraq and my fellow soldier that helped me install Ubuntu is now back in the states. Thanks! Sorry for the length.

this article explains how you can add amarok to your software sources which will allow you to get the latest version through your package manager instead of the old 1.x versions which is what ubuntu 8.10 uses by default
Meh. Amarok 2 is pretty much as useless as Aqualung, Rythmbox, Listen, and all the other music players no one ever uses. You can no-longer sort your play-list by clicking on particular headers (artist, album, track, year, etc.) you can no-longer sort your library by year, genera, album, etc. If I were shown the two side by side I would swear that 2 was the lightweight precursor to 1.4.

1.4 is awesome, 2.0 is not wort the disk space it takes up.
It is the official opinion of teh internets that Amarok 2 has more FAIL than iTunes.
Agreed, I can't even get the bloody thing to load my library, and the UI is plain atrocious :( Hopefully I can the previous version back up without too much work.

I give credit to the Amarok team for trying to make a great program better and I understand the desire to hurry this one to a stable release to keep up with KDE4 but A2.0 is so lacking it really isn't ready for prime time - it should be the beta version or a pre-release at this point.
