Parallels The New Ultimate Virtualization Solution?

Until now, Parallels has had problems compiling the the newest ubuntu kernels and now is working absolutely great on my ubuntu machine, i just ditched qemu, virtualbox, and vmware! Dont ditch yours just yet untill you have a feel of this Virtualization Solution that has suprised the hell out of me.

So far I have tried Windows XP, and PC-BSD and they both run much smoother on my box.

*update*
Pro's:
On my box I run Parallel's, Vmware Workstation, And VirtualBox, So It seems Parallel's is a little faster than Vmware Workstation and the Parallels Tools make VM's more responsive than vmware or VirtualBox.
Graphics and mouse are very responsive.
Con's:
Cannot mount whole disk partitions
parallels-config did not install modules to /etc/modules so I needed to add:
vm-main
vm-bridge
although this may only be because I run vmware/vbox as well...
User Interface could be improved.

Here are some features:

Hypervisor Technology for Stronger, More Stable Virtual Machines:

Parallels Workstation is the first desktop virtualization solution to include a lightweight hypervisor that directly controls some of the host computer’s hardware resources. The inclusion of this trusted, mature technology ensures that virtual PCs built using Parallels Workstation are the most stable and efficient available.

Optimized for Hardware Virtualization:

Parallels Workstation’s lightweight hypervisor fully supports the benefits of next-generation CPUs built on Intel’s VT architecture, and will support AMD Pacifica architecture when it is released to the general public.

Strong OS Support:

A sophisticated virtual machine engine that offers the broadest support of x86-based operating systems, including:

  • Windows family - 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP and 2003

  • Linux distributions from popular distributors like Red Hat, SuSE, Mandriva, Debian and Fedora Core

  • FreeBSD

  • "Legacy" operating systems like OS/2, eComStation and MS-DOS.

Easy to Install, Easy to Use:

A powerful wizard enables users to create virtual machines in seconds. The industry’s cleanest, most user-friendly management console ensures hassle free control of all virtual machines.

Highly Efficient:

A small program footprint and trusted hypervisor technology maximizes the efficiency of both the primary and guest OSes.

Lowest TCO:

At only $49.99 per license, Parallels Workstation is the most cost effective virtual PC solution available today. Its ease of use, high-efficiency, quick startup time and responsive technical support program maximize value and significantly reduce TCO.

STEP 1

>>Download Here<<
Then, either automatically install it, or save it to desktop and double click it and install it. Your choice.

STEP 3
Configure Parallels
In the Terminal
Code:

sudo parallels-config
And agree to the license agreements.

FINISHED

Now all to do is enter your license code, and your ready to Virtualize.

  1. Hey hey!!! Success at long last. Seems Parallels tech support should refer to this information.

  2. Hm, looks interesting, but I'm not really sure about the key generator. I'll definitely try it out, but I'll probably stick with Virtualbox, which offers a great solution for free :D

  3. Most cost effective? According to what? The license price? If so I must disappoint you as there are *plenty* of free (as in freedom and beer) virtualization solutions available.

Just because a program is free doesn't make it cost effective. In $ maybe sure, but think about wasted time trying to get Xen/KVM/Qemu working properly, when you could just install VMware/Paralells (or VirtualBox even, which is free as in beer) and easily do what you need to do.

And yes I know there is a FLOSS version of virtual box but its crap.

  5. VirtualBox 1.5.0 is better! Parallels doesn't support physical hard disks and I use LVM volumes a lot. In my case VirtualBox is also faster than VMWare and is free!!

crapp? hmm, this Parallels is a wine and bochs "evil" fork . if you don't believe it (the truth is out there, digg!)

The linux kernel already includes 64-bit emulation for x86 (long double float ?)

so ask you self this why the hence, I cannot run mac os X as guest ?? what's that crapp that your are refering to?

    same old, same old.

Qemu is the best fastest ever, ever.
    Pwns !#?!

  7. This link to a special build for Ubuntu worked well with Ubuntu 7.04. However, compile errors were back with Ubuntu 7.10!

I found an even newer build of Parallels here:
    http://www.parallels.com/en/download/workstation/
    Build 2204

It works well with Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon

  8. Instructions worked like a charm in 7.04. I had to repeat the steps after upgrading to gutsy and things seemed to work fine. However, despite the success I appear to have lost my ability to connect to the next through the
adapter... I've reinstalled parallels tools and have toyed with connecting as default, eth0, eth1, and still no connection of the VM through ubuntu. I'm running multiple VM's and they all have the same problems. Possibly I need to reconfigure again. Anyone else experiencing the same problems

  9. PARALLELS WORKSTATION DOES NOT WORK ON UBUNTU GUTSY!!!

The drivers do not compile properly on ubuntu 7.10 with kernel 2.6.22. Many things work but you won't be able to connect to the internet with your virtual machine. I've read about the "patch" however, I haven't found a clear cut tutorial on how to implement it.
